Their ancestors originally come from China, where the lanterns can still be admired in Chinese gardens and Buddhist temples today. They can also be found in Korea and Vietnam, although less frequently. In Japan, toros were originally placed in Buddhist temples, where they framed and illuminated the paths and were considered an offering to Buddha. From the Heian period (794-1185) they were also used in Shinto shrines and around Japanese homes.
