Description
The first lighthouse in New York State, commissioned by George Washington and built in 1796, has changed hands several times, but it is protected and preserved by The Montauk Historical today. It’s located 3 NM East of Montauk Airport (KMTP) at the Eastern tip of Long Island.
The Montauk Lighthouse was tended by local keepers until the Second World war when the Army took it over for coastal defense. In 1947, the Coast Guard took over its upkeep. In 1996, ownership of the property was transferred to The Montauk Historical Society.
It’s recognizable by its white-brown-white “day mark” during the day and its 5-second flash rate at night. A massive seawall was put in place to prevent erosion of the cliff on which the lighthouse stands. A future version of this model will contain that seawall.
