Emssperrwerk Landmark (River EMS Flood Barrier) V0.8 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
Emssperrwerk Landmark (River EMS Flood Barrier) V0.8 for MSFS 2020

The Emssperrwerk is a special flood barrier build close to where the river Ems mouths into the Dollard bay of the North Sea, located between Emden and Leer (or Gandersum and Nendorp, the small villages closest on both sides of the Ems), close to the German-Dutch border, and is a rather famous landmark of Ostfriesland. Build between 1998 and 2002, it is used to protect from storm surges, and to dam up the Ems and raise its waters if a ship from the Meyer Werft shipyards in Papenburg needs to be transitioned to the North Sea. I lived close to this place for a while, and seeing gigantic cruise ships pass through the river and the Emssperrwerk like moving high rise buildings was always a sight to see.

It is totally missing in the stock flight sim, with only some ill-fitting houses and half-bridge things placed by AI. I handcrafted this scenery in Blender and textured with Gimp, so this is no photogrammetry ripped from Google Maps or similar. This scenery has three LOD (Level of Detail) stages and lots of static lights.. there’s also some slight terraforming around the barrier (I made some of the dykes Asobo forgot) and a few more “eastereggs” around the area that are mostly just me learning how to use the SDK, as this is my first mod for the Microsoft Flightsimulator (you may recognise my nick from the Assetto Corsa community).

This scenery doesn’t need any other addons or libraries. It does work really well in combination with other North Sea addons like Aerosoft’s “Offshore Landmarks : North Sea” and general VFR flying between the islands and the continent. Have fun!
